MESQUITE, NEVADA –Friends of Gold Butte (FoGB), has named Brenda Slocumb, outreach and volunteer coordinator of FoGB, as new Operations Manager. She succeeds Jaina Moan, who is working for the Nature Conservancy. Slocumb will take office May 1st.
Brenda Slocumb has served as the Outings and Outreach Coordinator for the Friends of Gold Butte (FoGB) for the past three years. Her duties included managing the monthly FoGB Speaker Series, organizing and leading hikes and stewardship outings such as trash pickups and restoration projects, as well as coordinating the organization’s volunteer program. She was instrumental in the opening of the Friends of Gold Butte Visitor Center in Mesquite, which is also largely staffed by volunteers. Brenda has lived in Southern Nevada for most of her life, growing up in Boulder City and relocating to the Moapa Valley twenty years ago. She has owned a small business and prior to that was a 4-H Program Coordinator for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
Most recently Brenda organized and facilitated FoGB’s participation in a major collaborative project between the Bureau of Land Management, Clark County Public Works, the Great Basin Institute and the Desert Fossils hiking club. This project, completed over twelve days, resulted in dozens of volunteers spreading almost 200 tons of cold patch asphalt in the potholes existing in the paved portion of Gold Butte Road, making access easier and safer for all who travel there. FoGB members from Las Vegas and St. George assisted local Mesquite volunteers, some travelling back and forth, and some camping in the monument for the duration of the project.

Brenda says, “I have met so many wonderful people and I am grateful for this opportunity and thrilled to be involved with this organization going forward,” says Slocumb. “Friends of Gold Butte has the best group of volunteers on the planet, and I am excited to see what they can accomplish as we grow. Even now, plans are being made for an expanded slate of activities that will include youth programming, continued stewardship and recreational events and enhanced educational opportunities for the community and surrounding areas.”
