LAS VEGAS – In response to the introduction today of the America’s Natural Treasures of Immeasurable Quality Unite, Inspire, and Together Improve the Economies of States (ANTIQUITIES) Act of 2018 by Senator Tom Udall and co-sponsored by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Jaina Moan of the Friends of Gold Butte and Jose Witt of Friends of Nevada Wilderness released the following statement thanking the Senators for efforts to protect Gold Butte National Monument:
“This legislation ensures that the boundaries of Gold Butte and many other National Monuments will remain in place as established. This bill comes at a critical time. We are seeing an unprecedented attack on our American heritage and our public lands, including the threat of shrinking Gold Butte National Monument. We appreciate that Senator Udall and Senator Cortez Masto are once again standing up for national monuments and we are grateful for the additional protections the bill provides for spectacular landscapes in Gold Butte.”
Jaina Moan, Executive Director of the Friends of Gold Butte
“Friends of Nevada Wilderness has been working to protect the Wilderness values in the Gold Butte region for decades. The areas to be protected in this bill are the same ones that have been introduced into legislation many times in the past years. This bill could formalize these protections and would not change the way the Gold Butte National Monument is being managed and would not affect the current access to the areas. This legislation would also resolve the status of the remaining Wilderness study areas of Million Hills and Virgin Peak. Wilderness designation for some of these deserving areas is also very compatible with the national monument designation and would share some of the same protections.”
Jose Witt, Southern Nevada Director of the Friends of Nevada Wilderness
