On October 14th, 2023, something truly extraordinary is happening in Gold Butte National Monument that will make your visit even more memorable. As we celebrate National Public Lands Day, nature has an awe-inspiring spectacle in store for us – the 2023 solar annular eclipse.
While Gold Butte is not in the direct path of the full eclipse, we are in for a remarkable treat as we will experience an 85% eclipse right here in our National Monument. The annular solar eclipse is a rare and breathtaking event, where the Moon perfectly aligns with the Sun, leaving only a fiery ring, or “ring of fire,” around its edges.
The of celestial show commences in Nevada shortly after 8 am when the moon starts moving between the sun and the earth for our location. Peak coverage (about 85% in Mesquite and Gold Butte) will be around 9:20 am PDT, with the Moon’s shadow racing across the landscape at an astonishing speed of 5399 mph. As it gracefully exits our state at 9:28 am PDT, the Moon’s shadow will still be moving briskly at 3201 mph. The moon will fully uncover the sun around 10:45 am.
The maximum duration of annularity in Nevada during this eclipse is an impressive 4 minutes and 37 seconds, giving us ample time to marvel at this natural wonder.
Gather your friends and family, pack your eclipse glasses (we will have 60 on hand if you don’t have one), and join us at Gold Butte National Monument to witness this cosmic marvel. It’s an opportunity to connect with the grandeur of our universe while celebrating the beauty of our public lands.
Don’t miss out on this rare celestial event as it coincides with our National Public Lands Day festivities. Mark your calendars for October 14th, 2023, and be part of the magic in Gold Butte!
