Join Jim Boone and the Friends of Gold Butte as we hike to Little Finland via Mud Wash Corral. This is a short, 1/2-mile jaunt over the hills that adds a bit of interest to the Little Finland adventure, where you will be free to wander about and explore.
Little Finland itself is a magical area, full of petroglyphs, sandstone gnomes, fanciful shapes, and more monsters. It is a favorite of many hikers, and most definitely camera-worthy so be sure and bring yours.
Hikers who are not attending the Petroglyph Hike on 1/17 and camping at Whitney Pocket, please be aware that this hike will leave from the Whitney Pocket day use area (by the porta-toilet & kiosk) at 9:00 AM so please allow time to get there when planning your day.
As with all our hikes, please practice Leave No Trace principles, and be prepared to pack out everything you pack in. Please bring plenty of water and lunch/snacks for yourself, along with hand sanitizer, sunscreen, closed toed shoes and a hat. You may find that hiking poles are helpful. Dress appropriately for the weather, layers are best. Please practice social distancing and wear a face covering when in close proximity of others. You will need a high clearance vehicle, and 4WD is preferred.
Please, if you register and then are unable to attend, let us know by removing yourself from this Meetup in time to let others on the waitlist join in. If you are unable to do so, please message or call one of the organizers.
Gold Butte National Monument is primitive and has no services of any kind. Event participants must bring and carry their own water, food, sunscreen, basic first-aid items, any medications (e.g., EpiPen or asthma inhalers, etc.) a participant may need, and any other supplies they may want or need while participating in the event. Participants must wear appropriate footwear for the event (for example, for trash-clean-up events, sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots would be appropriate). Participants are strongly encouraged to wear broad-brimmed hats and dress in weather-appropriate clothing when participating outdoors. Participants are reminded to be plant and animal aware at all times. Finally, if the event necessitates, participants are strongly encouraged to provide their medical information (pre-existing conditions, medications, etc.) and their Emergency Contact information (name and phone number) on a card or piece of paper in a sealed envelope with their name on the outside. The volunteer organizer will collect and hold the envelopes during the event and return them, unopened, at the conclusion of the event if they are not needed. Please also review the statement found at this link, which all participants must sign before going on this hike. Assumption of Risk
