Here we go again! Clark County Public Works and the Bureau of Land Management will again be putting down cold patch asphalt to further remedy the paved-ish portion of Gold Butte Road, and they are asking for FoGB volunteers.

We are looking for volunteers who’d be willing to spread the material as the truck dumps it in the various potholes along the way. This will involve using a shovel, and the BLM will provide safety instructions and equipment as well as helmets and safety vests, as we will be working along the road. Duties will include shoveling material from the back of the truck into potholes or prepping potholes by sweeping them clean of loose materials. BLM and CC staff will collaboratively manage the project and will provide direction and traffic control. Volunteers will be required to walk varying distances daily while conducting the work (~1-5 miles per day.)

Many hands make light work, so the plan is to have 10 volunteers per day, and there will be a different Meetup for each day, to simplify signing up. Please be sure to make a note for yourself if you volunteer multiple days. If you are able, please consider signing up. Those who volunteered last time have said they enjoyed it, and, it’s not as hard as they originally thought it would be. There will also be donuts each morning!

You will need to bring lunch for yourself, and remember to wear sunscreen and dress in layers. You will need to wear a hard hat if working off the trucks, and those will be provided, but please bring eye protection and gloves, and wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. The weather is always unpredictable at this time of year, so be sure you are prepared. We will be parking along the road, so 4WD won’t be needed. Gold Butte National Monument is primitive and has no services of any kind. Event participants must bring and carry their own water, food, sunscreen, basic first-aid items, any medications (e.g., EpiPen or asthma inhalers, etc.) a participant may need, and any other supplies they may want or need while participating in the event. Participants must wear appropriate footwear for the event (for example, for trash-clean-up events, sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots would be appropriate). Participants are strongly encouraged to wear broad-brimmed hats and dress in weather-appropriate clothing when participating outdoors. Participants are reminded to be plant and animal aware at all times. Finally, if the event necessitates, participants are strongly encouraged to provide their medical information (pre-existing conditions, medications, etc.) and their Emergency Contact information (name and phone number) on a card or piece of paper in a sealed envelope with their name on the outside. The volunteer organizer will collect and hold the envelopes during the event and return them, unopened, at the conclusion of the event if they are not needed; and the assumption of risk statement found at In-person Assumption of Risk
