Earth Day Hike
Join hike leader Bob Schubert and the Friends of Gold Butte on an Earth Day Billion Year Old Hike! How fitting that we will see billion year old rock!
We will meet at the kiosk at 07:30 and drive to the Gold Butte Monument sign. Though high clearance vehicle are recommended, sedans and sub-compact cars are okay to drive on Gold Butte Road and parking at an open area just before the boundary marker.
We will be hiking on the mining (dirt) road for about a mile to
an old rusted out Plymouth (at least that is what most people think it is).
From there we will walk up a short steep mining road for a half mile to an exploratory mine. The view is very nice, and the rocks from the mine are beautiful and billions of years old (allegedly).
We should be back at the vehicles around noon as this will be a short hike rounding out to around three miles. It all depends how much time we spend at the car and the mine. Bring plenty of water and lunch / snacks. Those that may not want to climb to the mine will be expected to stay around the rusted vehicle.
Our hike leaders are First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED certified. We would like to see our hikers come prepared to care for their own minor scrapes and bruises, and do not be surprised if the critters are out as it is warming up. Boots with ankle support is recommended on the mine road, shade hats, sunscreen and hiking poles are also good items to have. We will practice “Leave No Trace” on our hike.
For all hikes, please wear sturdy shoes, breathable clothes, and a hat. Don’t forget to bring a jacket, sunscreen, water, lunch, and snacks. There are no stores or facilities in Gold Butte; be prepared to pee in the bushes. We practice Leave No Trace ethics so be prepared to carry out everything you bring in.
If you register for this hike and find you are unable to attend, please be courteous and remove yourself from the “going” list. If you are unable to do this, please email or call to let us know, so someone from the waitlist is able to attend.
Gold Butte National Monument is primitive and has no services of any kind. Event participants must bring and carry their own water, food, sunscreen, basic first-aid items, any medications (e.g., EpiPen or asthma inhalers, etc.) a participant may need, and any other supplies they may want or need while participating in the event. Participants must wear appropriate footwear for the event (for example, for trash-clean-up events, sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots would be appropriate). Participants are strongly encouraged to wear broad-brimmed hats and dress in weather-appropriate clothing when participating outdoors. Participants are reminded to be plant and animal aware at all times. Finally, if the event necessitates, participants are strongly encouraged to provide their medical information (pre-existing conditions, medications, etc.) and their Emergency Contact information (name and phone number) on a card or piece of paper in a sealed envelope with their name on the outside. The volunteer organizer will collect and hold the envelopes during the event and return them, unopened, at the conclusion of the event if they are not needed; and the assumption of risk statement found at In-person Assumption of Risk
