Join the Friends of Gold Butte and Jim Boone as we venture out of our normal “stomping grounds” and visit our sister monument to the north, Basin and Range National Monument. We will meet at the Friends of Gold Butte visitor center in Mesquite, and then caravan to Alamo where we will take a pitstop and meet up with Jim. This will be an overnight trip and we will spend the first day auto-touring the main part of Basin and Range, ending at Mt. Irish. We will drive through grand scenery, see petroglyphs, view Michael Heizer’s “City” from afar, and visit historical sites.
Those who want can primitive camp at Mt. Irish; any others can get a room in Alamo. On the second day, we will meet those who stay in Alamo in Alamo and drive to the Shooting Gallery unit of Basin and Range. We will then hike there to see spectacular rock stories, and then drive via the long or short ways back to the pavement and head home. For more detailed information, visit birdandhike.com and click on Basin and Range.
As far as vehicles go, medium-clearance, AWD or 4WD vehicles should suffice, but nothing bigger than a full-size pickup and no trailers. Please be sure your vehicle is equipped to handle this trip. There is food and gas available in Alamo and Ash Springs. You will need to bring your own equipment and food for an overnight campout. Please be aware that the desert can get cold at night, it is important to wear layers and bring enough clothing to stay comfortable no matter what the weather does.
We are pleased to offer this event to the public at no charge, but at this time we are not able to offer carpooling due to Covid-19. Please call 702-613-5875 if you have any questions.
