Join the Friends of Gold Butte as Jim Boone leads a hike along the Virgin Peak route. Virgin Peak Road is washed out near Whitney Pass, so we will park at Whitney Pass Road and walk about 1.7 miles to the old trailhead. From there we will continue along the regular Virgin Peak Trail and walk another 2.2 miles to the old cowboy campsite there. This hike will be at the bottom of the canyon, along the washed-out roads.
This is a moderate hike, and there will be ample opportunity to explore and take photos. Be sure and bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks for yourself, as well as adequate clothing. It is best to dress in layers, as weather can be unpredictable at this time of year. Sturdy hiking shoes, long pants and long sleeves, sunscreen and a hat are recommended.
Please remember to practice Leave No Trace principles, and be prepared to pack out everything you bring in. There are no services of any kind in Gold Butte, so be prepared to pee in the bushes! For more information on this hike, please visit Jim’s website, www.birdandhike.com. We try and carpool whenever possible, so if you’d like to attend and do not have a suitable vehicle, please let us know and we will make every effort to help. If you are able to drive and have a high clearance and/or 4WD vehicle and are able to take passengers, please let Jim know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
