Due to the overwhelming response for this hike last time, we have decided to offer another, provided Covid-19 restrictions do not prohibit it.
Join Jim Boone and the Friends of Gold Butte as we hike to Little Finland via Mud Wash Corral. This is an unusual double-circular corral that was built long ago by ranchers. Circular corrals are uncommon in general, but this one is two circular corrals linked together by a gate, forming a figure-8. The hike from Mud Wash Corral to Little Finland is a short, 1/3-mile jaunt over the hills that adds a bit of interest to the Little Finland adventure.
Little Finland itself is a magical area, full of petroglyphs, sandstone gnomes, fanciful shapes, and more monsters. It is a favorite of many hikers, and most definitely camera-worthy so be sure and bring yours.
There will be ample time to wander about the slick rock surfaces and explore.
Jim Boone is a wealth of information on all things Gold Butte, you may want to take a look at his website, birdandhike.com.
As with all our hikes, please practice Leave No Trace principles, and be prepared to pack out everything you pack in. Please bring plenty of water and lunch/snacks for yourself, along with hand sanitizer, sunscreen, closed toed shoes and a hat. You may find that hiking poles are helpful. Dress appropriately for the weather, layers are best. Please practice social distancing and wear a face covering when in close proximity of others.
