MEDIA RELEASE: MONUMENTS Exhibition Opening in Mesquite
Artists showcase work inspired by Nevada’s three national monuments
LAS VEGAS – Nevada’s three national monuments are featured in an art exhibition at the Mesquite Library. The MONUMENTS exhibition showcases work inspired by Tule Springs Fossil Beds, Basin and Range, and Gold Butte national monuments. The exhibition runs through September 29. An opening reception will be held on August 21 at the Cafe in the Mesquite Public Library.
Works of art include paintings, photography, and sculpture. Featured artists are Fawn Douglas, Sam Davis, Dave Rowe, Checko Salgado, Doug Bibo, UNLV photography and graphic design students, and the winners from a juried competition hosted by the Friends of Gold Butte and Protectors of Tule Springs.
“The diversity of artists who have contributed to this show is astonishing,” says Checko Salgado, curator for the exhibition and UNLV professor of photography. “It is incredible to see the creativity inspired by the amazing national monuments we have in our state.”
In addition to the well known artists in the show, UNLV students created content for the exhibition. Checko Salgado partnered with Friends of Gold Butte to lead three on-the-ground tours for UNLV of Gold Butte National Monument. The Photography for Graphic Design class was assigned the task of creating promotional materials for the exhibition. Students in the Commercial Photography class took outdoor portraits and landscape photos.
“This exhibition has touched many people beyond the artists, from the UNLV students who went to Gold Butte to researchers who were studying biological soil crusts to our volunteers who served as models and tour guides,” says Jaina Moan, Executive Director of Friends of Gold Butte. “The result is a multi-sensory experience of Gold Butte National Monument. We feel so honored to participate in the creation of art dedicated to a place we love.”
The MONUMENTS exhibition will be open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-6:45 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:45 p.m, and Sunday from 1:00pm-4:45pm. The opening reception will be held on August 21 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.friendsofgoldbutte.org/monumentsexhibition/.
