Mining Claim Marker Take-Down
February 15 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
• What we’ll do
We will meet at the start Gold Butte Road and drive south about 30 miles into the heart of Gold Butte National Monument to an area staked with metal mining claim markers that were abandoned decades ago. These markers trap and kill birds, bats, bees, and other species. We will hike over moderately difficult terrain, taking down a long line of mining claim markers. This hike should be 5-6 miles entirely off trail. We will hike along the base of a rocky ridge, then head up onto steeper, more rocky terrain to knock down the markers.
For more information on the Mining Claim Marker Project, see:
Friends of Gold Butte events are free and open to the public. We have separate carpool locations for Las Vegas area and Mesquite–St. George area hikers. In Las Vegas, we meet to carpool at 7:30am at the Cannery Casino (parking garage, 3rd floor, near the elevators) and hopefully return by 5:30pm. For those in Mesquite and St. George, and for the carpoolers from Las Vegas, we will meet at the start of Gold Butte Road at 9:00am and hopefully return to that spot by 4:00pm.
• What to bring
Hikers should bring everything needed to spend a comfortable winter day hiking off-trail in the desert, plus (1) a note pad to record dead birds and other species found in the markers, (2) a GPS device of some sort to record marker locations (phone apps are okay), and (3) a camera. Some equipment will be available for loan.
• Important to know
This hike will be moderately difficult, so only active hikers should sign up.
