Join Friends of Gold Butte & BLM staff in celebration of National Public Lands Day
Saturday, September 26th, 2009, at Gold Butte
Come and help us:

  • We will build a split rail fence to define a parking area for the “Falling Man” area.
  •  We will plant creosote, Mormon tea, and cacti along the old road bed to construct an inviting trail.
  • We’ll have T-shirts for volunteers, shade tents for story tellin’, plus lots of great new friends for you to meet.
  •  Hosts Betsy and Roy Miller will give short tours for the volunteers throughout the day.
  • Bring your picnic and stay the day!

The event is limited to 50 volunteers so please sign up soon. It’s easy! Just email Roy Miller. Please include how many in your party, your phone number, and if you have a preference to plant, build a fence, or help with lighter duties. There are opportunities for those of all abilities to participate. Call Nancy Hall with any questions. 702-346-3723.
To reduce our impact on the area, we suggest that you carpool to Gold Butte. Please choose the closest meet up place and contact the organizer for that area:
Mesquite – email Betsy Miller or phone 702-345-3006
Moapa Valley - email Par Rasmusson or phone 702-215-9119
Las Vegas – email Terri Robertson or phone 702-459-7613
St. George – email Milton Compton or phone 435-632-8082

Fundraiser for Adopt-a-Plant and Fence Materials
Friends of Gold Butte will be acquiring the supplies for the National Public Lands Day project. The Division of Forestry has creosote and Mormon tea seedlings at $3/plant. I have ordered 100 plants for you to adopt and place in the ground.
We will also collect cacti from the Coyote Springs salvage area on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The cacti are free and I will need volunteers to help with the collection (Nancy Hall, 702-346-3723).
The fence we are going to install will be natural split rail fence similar to the one at the Hackberry Springs trailhead in the Mormon Mountain Wilderness. It has been respected and enjoyed by visitors to the area for several years.
To reserve your plants @ $3 each and/or donate towards the fence project, please send your check to:
Friends of Gold Butte
P.O. Box 3664
Mesquite, NV 89024
We will also accept donations on volunteer day when you sign in. Any money over the amount needed for the National Public Lands Day project will go towards future restoration project materials.

September Membership Meeting
Friends of Gold Butte monthly membership meetings and speakers are being planned. Mesquite members will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month and Las Vegas members will have periodic meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. We will continue to open at 6pm, have a members’ meeting @ 6:30, begin presentation at 7, and close by 8:30.
Meetings in Mesquite begin on September 16 with guest Lauren Brown, BLM Restoration Coordinator, presenting an explanation and instructions on our Public Lands Day event on Saturday, September 26.
The Mesquite meeting place has not yet been determined.

Gold Butte National Conservation Area Legislation
Congresswoman Dina Titus is interested in your thoughts on legislation for the Gold Butte National Conservation Area. Below is a link to an Internet form you may fill out with your thoughts on Gold Butte’s future. A few ideas are listed here:

  • Thank Congresswoman Titus for her interest in Gold Butte and preserving our irreplaceable historic, prehistoric and natural heritage.
  • Express support for a National Conservation Area for Gold Butte Country and the urgency for designation.
  • Describe an individual experience, a favorite place or a recent visit.
  • If you enjoy hiking in wild places such as Lime Canyon Wilderness or the proposed Billy Goat Peak Wilderness, express your support.
  • If not now - when? It is 7 years after the first proposal for protection and the area just continues to degrade. The time is now!

If you are in District Three, you can email Representative Titus at: https://forms.house.gov/titus/contact-form.shtml
or mail a copy of the form to:
