This is just a reminder that with the summer heat comes the fire season.  The higher than normal winter precipitation has created a blanket of non native grasses producing a high fuel load for the fire season.  Mid July brings the “monsoon” season with wet and dry thunderstorms, sparking back country wildfires.Public land managers have posted fire prevention tips and restrictions.

Recently, near the end of June, I was in Gold Butte as the day’s light softly faded away. A lithe summer breeze wrapped its arms around me and I waited for my scheduled appointment with the moon and stars. On that day the peace of Gold Butte called so loud that an evening visit could not be postponed.

Tucked between the Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument in Arizona and Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada is a place named for the historic mining town of the early 1900s — Gold Butte. However, Gold Butte today is much more than remnants of early mining; it is one of the most ruggedly beautiful spots in the West. It is 360,000 acres of mountains, Joshua tree and Mojave yucca forests, outcroppings of sandstone, and braided washes that turn into slot canyons.

Clark County commissioners voted 6-1 Tuesday in favor of a resolution recommending Gold Butte become a national conservation area, similar to a resolution passed unanimously by Mesquite’s city council in October.

Next Tuesday, the city council will consider rescinding its resolution, amending it, or approving an alternative resolution that brings together some diverse perspectives.
