TAKE ACTION

Many groups and individuals have been working for the protection of Gold Butte’s extraordinary resources for many years. The time has come for the Gold Butte National Conservation Area and Wilderness designation, and we need you to take action now. Here’s how:

Over the last ten years, support for protecting Gold Butte has grown steadily.  And recently, we’ve experienced a real groundswell of support among diverse supporters. The City of Mesquite, Clark County Commission and the Paiute tribes have all passed resolutions of support and send positive messages to our representatives about the overwhelming need to introduce legislation this year.  Your representative needs to hear from you today.

It is up to you to make a difference in Gold Butte’s future:

  • Gold Butte cannot wait! Designation is needed to begin a comprehensive management plan to protect the cultural and natural resources of the area.
  • Mojave Desert habitat that remains unfragmented is essential to sensitive wildlife such as the tortoise, Gila monster and kit fox.
  • Wilderness provides a “forever home” for our desert wildlife.
  • Education, interpretation and visitor management is needed for our cultural resources; the presence of the past is irreplaceable.
  • Wilderness and the designated route plan will balance motorized and non-motorized recreation for a positive visitor experience.
  • Gold Butte National Conservation Area, partnering with Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument and the Beaver Dam National Conservation Area could create a multi agency office with a visitor center in Mesquite.  This will ensure a local ranger presence for our special landscapes and benefit the local economy.

Sample letter:

Dear Representative,

Gold Butte’s landscape is rich in archaeological, cultural and biological resources, including thousands of Native American petroglyphs, mining era artifacts, incredible plant life, desert big horn sheep and the federally listed desert tortoise. This beautiful wild area needs protection through the designation of National Conservation Area with Wilderness.

This designation will bring a comprehensive management plan for all recreationists, visitor education, and forever homes for desert wildlife.

The time is NOW for Gold Butte.  Please act soon, by supporting legislation for Gold Butte.

Thank you,
